About this app

Depth of Field (DOF) is the range of distance in a photo that appears to be in sharp focus ... Depth of field is a creative decision and one of your most important choices when composing nature photographs.

This Depth of Field calculator allows you to calculate :

• Near limit of acceptable sharpness
• Far limit of acceptable sharpness
• Total depth of field length
• Hyperfocal distance

The calculation relies on :

• Camera model or Circle of Confusion
• Lens focal length (ex: 50mm)
• Aperture / f-stop (ex: f/1.8)
• Distance to Subject

Depth of Field definition :

Given a critical focus achieved for the plane located at the Subject distance, the Depth of Field is the extended area in front of and behind that plane that will appear reasonably sharp. It could be considered as a region of adequat focus.

Hyperfocal Distance definition :

Hyperfocal distance is the lowest Subject distance for a given camera setting (aperture, focal length) for which Depth of Field extends to infinity.

In documentary or street photography, the distance to the subject is often unknown in advance, while the need to react quickly remains essential. Using hyperfocal distance allows for presetting the focus to achieve a sufficiently wide depth of field that covers likely subjects. This approach is especially useful for manual focusing, either when autofocus is unavailable or when one chooses not to rely on it. In landscape photography, hyperfocal focusing is valuable for maximizing depth of field—either by achieving the greatest possible range for a given aperture or by determining the minimum aperture needed to keep both the foreground and infinity in acceptable focus.

Brilliant with a full frame sensor. Less convenient for bridge cameras with crop sensors because you need to enter the actual focal length, not the 35 mm equivalent. Actual focal length isn't something you can just read off the display of your bridge camera, so you still need your calculator app for the conversion.

Nice easy to use app. If you need to calculate depth of field or the hyper focal setting it provides it. I used it to try out various settings to gain a better understanding of lens performance. Sunday morn with coffee and this app was time we'll spent. 😊

Simplicity makes this tool wholesome. Knocking off one star as I think the distance bar should not be linear in choice. More log with near distance incremental will be helpful. Chao.
